Trump’s costly trade war
Over the weekend, Trump unleashed a wave of reckless tariffs on goods coming from Canada and Mexico, and that means one thing for you: higher prices on everyday essentials.
Trump's tariff tantrum is another self-serving move to distract from his plans to massively cut taxes for his billionaire friends while you're stuck paying the price. And with Canada and Mexico planning to retaliate with tariffs of their own, his trade war will only intensify.
Here's just a short list of how Trump's new tariffs could hit your wallet hard:
- Gas: Mexico and Canada supply 70% of U.S. crude oil imports, which means it will cost more to fill your tank.
- Fruits and vegetables: Mexican imports account for a large share of fruits and vegetables, including 90% of the avocados eaten in the U.S., which means it will be more expensive to put food on the table.
- Tequila, beer, and other alcoholic drinks: In 2022, the U.S. imported about $26 billion worth of alcoholic drinks from Mexico, which will make some of the most popular brands more expensive.
- Cars and auto parts: In 2023, Canada and Mexico accounted for nearly $120 billion worth of U.S. motor vehicle imports, which means car prices and repairs are going to climb.
Trump's costly trade war will mean more economic pain for working families. For ordinary Americans, these higher costs are the difference between healthy meals, paying for daycare, getting to work with a full tank of gas, or affording rent.
We know that when we stand up and fight back, Trump often backs down. It was just reported that the tariffs on Mexican-made goods have been delayed – which is good news for Americans – but Trump is still ready to implement them at any moment. I'm working with my colleagues to raise the alarm about the real impacts of Trump's ego-fueled costly trade war and put working Americans first.
Onward!
