Trump’s unconstitutional power grab

Trump signed an illegal order that cuts all federal grants and loans, slamming the door shut on popular, effective programs that benefit millions of Americans. Programs that feed children, help disaster victims, and fund firefighters, police officers, and hospitals.

Right now, there's a lot of confusion surrounding this order because the White House rescinded the Office of Management and Budget memo but kept in place the federal funding cuts. They're trying to make it as confusing as possible to distort the facts.

Let me be clear: This order is unconstitutional, and we must not allow Trump to implement this dangerous power grab. The power to set government funding lies with Congress, and try as he might, Trump cannot make the presidency an all-powerful perch to unilaterally decide what the federal government funds.

Trump's order slams the door on federal funding that Oregonians count on to get back on their feet, thrive, and build a future for their families. Trump is stopping us from being able to feed our kids and seniors, keep our communities safe, afford housing, health care, and education, and make sure we have the resources to recover from natural disasters, and much more.

We are taking action. I'm working alongside my Democratic colleagues to do everything we can to fix this unconstitutional crisis that Trump and his MAGA allies have now created.

This is not the time to be silent.
