MAGA Republicans are threatening a shutdown

Once again, MAGA Republicans are threatening a government shutdown unless Congress passes an unrelated bill — this time, one to make it harder to vote. Yes, you read that right.

Let me be clear: Mike Johnson must not give the extremists in the Freedom Caucus license to hurt American families and businesses by allowing a government shutdown.

Time and time again, we've been able to work across the aisle to fund the government and avoid a shutdown, and this latest partisan game from the Trump wing of the Republican party is dangerous, reckless, and would damage our country.

There is a looming deadline on September 30, and right now, we're approaching another moment where MAGA Republicans are willing to hold our country hostage over their fever dreams of forcing through legislation that would make it harder to register to vote in all 50 states.

Misguided is an understatement.

A shutdown will only hurt hard-working Americans. Congress doesn't need divisive games. It needs common sense.

Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are working towards a bipartisan government funding deal. We know that there's too much at stake to play chicken with a government shutdown. Let's get a deal done and keep the lights on.
