Legislation has been discussed or proposed aimed at restricting certain types of contraception
Right now, we're living with the disastrous aftermath of the 2022 ruling by the Supreme Court's conservative, extremist majority in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. It's just one more example of this Court's unprecedented eagerness to curtail our civil liberties.
That decision demolished the constitutional right to an abortion and handed right-wing legislatures across the country the power to impose bans and severe restrictions that put people's lives at risk and punish doctors for providing abortion care.
It also opened the door for a wave of nonstop attacks on reproductive rights – including access to birth control.
The effect has been chilling. MAGA Republicans are pushing hard to curtail birth-control access by spewing misinformation about how various methods work to prevent pregnancy and trying to railroad through bills in state legislatures. Already, legislation has been discussed or proposed in Idaho, Missouri, Louisiana, Arkansas, Michigan, and other states aimed at restricting access to contraception.
Last week, my Democratic Senate colleagues and I voted to pass the Right to Contraception Act, which would codify the right of Americans to have access to birth control pills, but Republicans blocked it from moving forward.
It's outrageous that Republicans continue to put lives at risk by playing partisan games to criminalize reproductive care.
Your right to access the full range of reproductive care should not depend on where you live or who controls your state legislature. Restoring and defending reproductive rights for all Americans is one of the reasons I'm so focused on holding the Senate Democratic Majority and flipping the House in 2024.
The right to bodily autonomy is a fundamental right. I won't stop fighting, and I know you won't either.
Onward!
