Election deniers are threatening election officials to undermine our democracy

MAGA false claims about stolen elections in 2020 have had an alarming consequence – an increase in right-wing threats against election workers across the country, including here in Oregon. From physical attacks to harassment to intimidation, election deniers are threatening election officials to delegitimize our free and fair elections.

The ballot box is the beating heart of our democracy, and it is under attack like never before.

Republican state legislators have introduced hundreds of bills in dozens of states that would give partisan actors more power to interfere with and threaten election workers and processes, and these bills are taking their toll in election offices across the country.

Forty-five percent of election workers nationwide say they fear for their colleagues’ safety, and over one in ten say they’re very or somewhat likely to quit before the 2024 elections.

That’s why I joined my colleagues to introduce the Preventing Election Subversion Act to safeguard election workers against political threats. This legislation would institute new safeguards to insulate state election administrators from partisan pressure and empower non-partisan local election officials to protect the right to vote. .

We can’t allow our elections to be held hostage by right-wing extremists who don’t care about our laws or our democracy and will do anything to subvert our elections..

I’m pushing for further protections for our election workers because we need to do everything we can to protect those who ensure the integrity of the ballot box and safeguard the will of the voters.
