Right now, we have a right-wing majority on the Supreme Court – with three extremist Justices appointed by Donald Trump joining the Republican majority. Our lower courts are filled with his appointees, too, whose rulings have restricted our civil rights. Every year, the Supreme Court hands down decisions that impact the lives of every American, from gerrymandering to environmental regulations to civil rights like abortion rights and LGBTQ+ rights. We're at the tail end of the 2023-2024 Supreme Court docket and are about to see what chaos the extremist Court will hand down this year.
It doesn't have to be this way.
We can remake the courts and appoint judges who rule in cases by using the Constitution as their guide, not their right-wing political ideology. While changing the makeup of the Supreme Court is a big goal for us, we can also celebrate that President Biden has appointed – and the Senate confirmed – the most judges in the first term of any president. And the appointees have been the most qualified, diverse bunch of judges ever, mirroring the beautiful diversity of our country. These are judges who will rule for the people, not the powerful.
Here's the deal: One of the Senate's most important tasks is to confirm federal judges. If we hold the Democratic Senate Majority, we can continue to confirm qualified – not ideological – judges and reshape the courts for generations to come. Right now, there are a handful of judges still pending confirmation because Democrats have such a slim majority in the Senate. We need to hold AND expand our Democratic Senate Majority to help President Biden put more judges on the federal bench in his second term – or stop a potential President Trump from further decimating the courts.
