The SCERT, DISCLOSE, and ETHICS Acts
My colleagues and I are supposed to work for 'We the People,' but with right-wing billionaires corrupting the Supreme Court, members of Congress trading stocks giving the appearance of conflicts of interest, and corporate interests funneling dark money into Super PACs to manipulate our elections, the people's voice is being drowned out.
We need to end these practices now, and that's why I'm championing some key bills to fight the forces that are corrupting our democracy.
First, The DISCLOSE Act would end the corrupting influence of dark money, shine a bright light of transparency on political spending, and make government more accountable to voters.
Dark money allows donors with special interests to hide their identities, making it impossible for Americans to know who is behind the massive flow of money into our elections and what motivates them.
There's no place in our democratic republic for hidden expenditures by untraceable special interests. It's long past time for Congress to pass this bill and stop billionaires with right-wing agendas from secretly buying our elections.
Second, the ETHICS Act is new, comprehensive legislation that would prohibit members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from using their positions for personal financial gain by owning or trading securities, commodities, or futures.
We are elected to serve the public, and people need to know their representatives are working for them and not their stock portfolios.
*Third, The SCERT Act would create real ethical guardrails for the Supreme Court.
Headline after headline makes it clear that the Court needs to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and transparency.
The Supreme Court hands down life-altering decisions on everything from our climate to our right to vote. We need an enforceable code of ethics for SCOTUS justices so the public can trust that those decisions are made without undue influence.
I know you're with me on the need to clean up our government and restore trust in Washington, D.C. Let's get these bills passed to make sure we have a government by, of, and for the people.
Onward!
