We have to fight to defend Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin
I want to talk to you about my good friend and progressive ally, Senator Tammy Baldwin.
When Tammy was just nine years old, she spent three months in the hospital with a serious illness. After she recovered, her illness was labeled a "pre-existing condition," making it impossible for her grandparents, who were raising her, to find insurance — at any price. That's why Tammy has fought so hard for health care reform in Congress, including allowing kids to stay on their parents' health insurance until age 26 and banning the use of "pre-existing conditions" to deny coverage.
Tammy's grandparents raised her because her mother struggled with mental illness and prescription drug abuse. But as her grandmother grew older, Tammy became her primary caregiver. She knows the struggles families face to provide care for aging seniors. That's why, as a Senator, she passed legislation to support family members serving as caregivers.
Outside Wisconsin, Tammy is perhaps best known as being the first openly gay candidate elected to the House of Representatives when she won in 1998, and then, in 2012, to the U.S. Senate. But in Wisconsin, Tammy is best known as a fierce champion for working families, civil rights, small businesses, veterans, children, and seniors.
For me, Tammy has been an invaluable partner in our fight against billionaires, Big Pharma, Wall Street, multinational corporations, and the lobbyists and Super PACs that pit their interests against the interests of regular folks across America. She's my co-pilot on the Equality Act and led the fight to get the Respect for Marriage Act passed to defend all marriages from the extremist majority on the Supreme Court. Tammy's a workhorse for our values.
But make no mistake: Wisconsin might be the toughest swing state in America, and the Wisconsin GOP is going to throw everything they have at Tammy to flip this seat. Last year, Republicans spent a record $77 million to defend Ron Johnson and won that Senate race by just 1%. Right now, MAGA Republicans are poised to flood the state with dark money to defeat Tammy in 2024.
Onward!
