We fight for this: Equal Justice Under Law π³οΈβπ
Pride is rooted in activism. And this pride month I'm calling for more action. More action to support the LGBTQ+ community. More action to protect transgender kids. More action to stop extremists who would marginalize LGBTQ+ communities. More action.
Pride began with Stonewall in 1969 and the parades that commemorated the uprising in 1970. Pride has always been about standing up for our right to love freely and openly and to be who we are. This year we have so much to celebrate, like the Respect for Marriage Act that we passed last summer to protect marriage equality, but we also have so much more to fight for.
Above the Supreme Court is carved, "Equal Justice Under Law." But it's painfully, tragically obvious that for all of our progress, not everyone is guaranteed equal justice in the United States. The LGBTQ+ community still faces discrimination and hatred and marginalization. And that is why I continue to fight for equal justice under law.
In our country, we see Republican-led states become less free while Democrat-led states bolster the rights of LGBTQ+ communities.
Republicans have selected the trans community as their latest political punching bag, passing laws to bully children and marginalize entire communities. We are at a point today where the Human Rights Campaign has issued travel advisories to warn LGBTQ+ people of the dangers of traveling to certain states.
Our movement is not about you or me. It is about all of us. It is about the fight to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ people, children, and communities. A fight that we wage every day.
Pride is a time to celebrate, to see how far we have come, and to remember those we lost along the way. But it is also a time to renew our commitment to this fight, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
Onward!
