Petition: reject the 30% national sales tax
Sometimes, you just have to shake your head (or roll your eyes) at the unbelievable stuff we hear from the other side of the aisle.
Have you heard the latest?
The Republicans in the U.S. House think we should abolish the income tax and replace it with a 30% sales tax.
No kidding.
I've joined with progressive organizations across America to denounce this thing. Will you join us and add your name to tell Congress to hold firm and reject a 30% national sales tax?
The arguments are plain and simple:
-
A national sales tax would raise taxes on low-income and middle-income families who spend most of their income on buying groceries, gas, clothes, and medicine.
-
Meanwhile, a national sales tax would be a huge tax cut for the wealthiest Americans who spend a much smaller chunk of their income on basic goods and services.
-
In places like Oregon, where we don't have a sales tax, the cost of implementing this policy would be a crushing cost to small retailers and restaurants. (And in sales tax states, the mix of goods and services taxed would be different, creating chaos at the cash register.)
This is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad idea. Sign my petition to tell Congress to toss this idea in the trash can where it belongs.
