The powerful story of Senator Tammy Baldwin
Today, it's Senator Tammy Baldwin's birthday.
And if you'll give me a few minutes of your time, I'll tell you her powerful, inspirational story — and hopefully, you'll decide it's worth celebrating her birthday by chipping in a few dollars to make sure she's re-elected next year.
When Tammy was just nine years old, she spent three months in the hospital with a serious spinal condition. After she recovered, her illness was labeled a "pre-existing condition" making it impossible for her grandparents, who were raising her, to find insurance — at any price. That's why Tammy has fought so hard for health care reform in Congress – including allowing kids to stay on their parents' health insurance until age 26, and banning the use of "pre-existing conditions" to block coverage.
She was raised by her grandparents because her mother struggled with mental illness and prescription drug abuse. But as her grandmother grew older, Tammy worked as her primary caregiver. She knows the struggles that families go through to provide for aging seniors. That's why, as a Senator, she passed legislation to support family members that serve as caregivers.
Outside Wisconsin, Tammy is perhaps best known as being the first openly-gay non-incumbent elected to the House of Representatives in 1998 and then, in 2018, to the U.S. Senate.
But in Wisconsin, she's best known as a champion for working families, small businesses, veterans, children, and seniors.
For me, she's been an invaluable partner in our fight against the billionaires, Big Pharma, Wall Street, multinational corporations – and the lobbyists and Super PACs that defend their interests against the interests of regular folks across America. She's my co-pilot on the Equality Act and led the fight to get the Respect for Marriage Act passed and defend our marriages from the extremist majority on the Supreme Court. Tammy's a workhorse for our values.
But make no mistake: Wisconsin might be the toughest swing state in America. Last year, in the same election, Wisconsin re-elected a great Democratic Governor and one of the most MAGA Republican Senators.
Can I count on you?
