Roe v. Wade, 50 years later
Fifty years ago today, the Supreme Court issued its historic ruling in Roe v. Wade, a monumental step forward for equality, bodily autonomy, and reproductive freedom.
We should be celebrating. But then the radical conservative majority on today's Court smashed the long-standing precedent—and our rights—with its appalling decision in Dobbs.
Across the country, right-wing state legislators immediately took advantage, effectively banning abortion rights in a dozen states, and passing severe restrictions in over a dozen more. They are even trying to punish doctors in states where abortion is legal, like Oregon, when women travel to seek reproductive health care.
And in just its first few days, the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives has passed an outrageous bill to criminalize abortion and restrict reproductive health care nationwide.
That bill will not pass the Senate, nor would it be signed by President Biden, but it's a sign of what's to come if the Republicans win control of the Senate and the White House in 2024.
The Republicans are hellbent on taking women's rights away, no matter where you live.
We are living through an incredibly painful and scary time for our nation. Access to abortion and the ability to control one's own body is a fundamental right.
I am committed to keep fighting for you. And I know you'll keep fighting alongside me.
Onward.
