π We need Climate Champions in Congress
The final days of the Supreme Court's term were a whirlwind of horrific decisions. Over and over, attacks on so many of our most important values β abortion rights, gun safety, tribal sovereignty, voting rights, and environmental protection.
Here's what you need to know about the decision in West Virginia vs. EPA:
-The decision was, no surprise, a 6-3 decision with the six right-wing justices in the majority, and the three progressives dissenting.
-The Supreme Court struck down President Obama's Clean Power Plan, a plan to regulate fossil-fuel-fired electric generators β even though that plan had never actually been implemented.
-This decision strikes at the whole reason Congress passed the Clean Air Act - to give the EPA the power and responsibility to meet the ever-changing challenges of air pollution. This decision ties the EPA's hands.
-What's next? The Supreme Court has already taken up a Clean Water Act case next year, and before long, they'll be taking on state rules curbing tailpipe emissions from cars.
Now, more than ever, we need Climate Champions in Congress β leaders willing to take big, bold action to stop pollution and tackle the climate crisis. We must fight back against Big Oil, Big Coal, the Koch Brothers network, and the corporations that pollute our air, land, and water - and fund vast dark money confirmation campaigns for right-wing Supreme Court justices.
