Defend abortion rights: 2 things you can do RIGHT NOW
The catastrophic news that we've feared is here. The Supreme Court has officially overturned Roe v. Wade.
This is a terrible day, and I want to recognize what it means.
But I want to be crystal clear: We will not give up.
Make no mistake: in gutting Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court has taken away rights that have been protected by the Constitution for five decades and told Americans that MAGA politicians get to decide what happens to their bodies. It's horrific.
It's also worth noting how we got here. For years, far-right anti-abortion extremists have worked to undermine reproductive rights. With the help of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Donald Trump stole a Supreme Court seat and stacked the court with three anti-abortion extremists selected by the right-wing Federalist Society.
The final breaking point happened just this year. A vote to protect abortion rights nationwide failed when anti-abortion extremists in the Senate hid behind their favorite tool: the anti-democratic, minority-rule, secret, silent filibuster.
And now, the court has officially overturned Roe v. Wade.
So here we are.
As much as we're all reeling from this loss, we must keep up the fight. We don't have a moment to waste. We have to provide safe, accessible options for people who need abortion care now and in the months to come. Then we have to elect a strong majority that can succeed in enshrining the right to comprehensive reproductive health care into federal law.
Today's decision is having an immediate effect on patients and providers in anti-choice states. These patients can't wait on the federal government to take action – they need access NOW. Please rush a donation of $3 to the National Network of Abortion Funds and let's make sure people seeking abortions have access to this vital health care service.
Next, we need to ensure that people everywhere in America have access to safe, legal abortions nationwide by enshrining that right in federal law. And that means we must expand our Senate majority.
Val Demings in Florida and Cheri Beasley of North Carolina are two reproductive rights champions running to flip Republican seats blue. If they're both elected, we'll have the votes we need to reform the corrupted filibuster rules and pass abortion rights into law. Chip in $3 now, and let's elect these two reproductive health care champions to the Senate.
Anti-abortion extremists think they've won this battle. They have no idea how strong our movement is.
We're not going to let extremists get away with stripping away the fundamental right to abortion.
Onward,
Jeff
