How about we stop funding our enemies?
I hate to say it, but America is still addicted to fossil fuels.
And Big Oil and their friends in Congress want to keep it that way. But burning oil and gas not only drives climate chaos, it also enriches our enemies and makes our families and businesses vulnerable to gas price spikes.
Countries like Russia and Iran already use their roles as major oil exporters to fund their militaries and terrorist activity. Russia is using oil and gas to blackmail Europe and to pay for its bloodthirsty atrocities in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin's autocratic reign of terror is powered by fossil fuels.
Here in the United States, oil companies claim the crisis in Ukraine is the reason gas prices are so high. But the real reason is greed, plain and simple. Recently, Shell, Chevron, and Exxon Mobil boasted record-breaking windfall profits. And yet they continue raising gas prices on consumers to further enrich their executives and shareholders.
That's right: oil companies are gouging the American people. The rich get richer while millions of working Americans are forced to choose between gas and food.
This is clearly a desperate situation. Our reliance on fossil fuels is a national security threat, an economic security threat, and an environmental threat.
I'm not prone to despair though. We can solve these problems. We just need more leaders who will stand up and lead the fight against Big Oil and Putin.
We must work rapidly to end our dependence on fossil fuels and transition as quickly as possible to renewable energy. Every effort to slow down that transition makes enemies like Russia stronger and lets Big Oil reach a little deeper into the pockets of American families and businesses.
Americans want Climate Champions who will take on special interests and end our dependence on fossil fuels. Green energy is the future. I'm all in on this fight. I know you are too. Let's elect some more Climate Champions and make it happen!
Onward,
Jeff
