We cannot allow politicians and judges to abolish abortion in America
A draft Supreme Court opinion by Justice Samuel Alito that would overturn Roe v. Wade has been leaked to the press.
Even as we've known for years that this was the goal of right-wing activists stacking the court, it is nonetheless shocking and outrageous to see it in plain black-and-white text.
Right-wing justices want to force women to carry pregnancies to term against their will. It is absolutely chilling.
Like you, I am outraged.
Make no mistake, if this decision becomes final, people will die. There will be places in America where people will be sent to jail for the "crime" of seeking or providing medical care. And of course, the impact will fall heaviest on lower-income Americans and women of color.
We need an immediate vote on the floor of the US Senate to reform the filibuster and enshrine a nationwide right to an abortion in federal law. Your rights should not depend on where you live or which party controls your state legislature.
And as horrific as the immediate impacts of this decision will be if this draft opinion is ultimately adopted, the ripple effects go even further. You better believe that if this Court is so eager to throw out a half-century of precedent to stand in between women and their doctors when it comes to abortion care, so many of our other rights are in peril too. Next could be access to birth control or gay marriage. The MAGA right wing wants to force you to live your life according to their preferences, and this Court seems ready to partner with them to take away Americans' liberties and freedom of choice.
This self-appointed super-legislature threatening to rewrite our Constitutional rights is the poisoned fruit of Mitch McConnell's theft of a seat on the Supreme Court and efforts to stack it with a 6-3 conservative majority. The Senate has never been more crucial.
Our fundamental human rights are on the ballot in November.
Onward.
