In Oregon, talk infrastructure with the president
President Joe Biden visited Oregon last week and I was glad to join him in celebrating our shared commitment to rebuilding America's infrastructure, tackling the climate crisis and building an economy that works for everyone.
In the president's own words, we've traded Trump's failed "infrastructure week" for a real "infrastructure decade" to rebuild America. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is a once-in-a-generation investment in our transportation, water infrastructure, broadband and more. Right here in Oregon, this means:
-$662 million for Oregon roads.
-$53 million for Oregon bridges.
-$211 million for Oregon airports.
-And much, much more.
One of the most exciting examples of forward-leaning infrastructure investment I hope will come out of this law is a brand new container terminal at the Port of Coos Bay. It would ease our nation's supply chain problem, while creating a permanent source of jobs in Oregon. And as the first ship-to-rail port on the West Coast, it would cut out trucks and have a much lower carbon footprint than other ports.
Because of the new funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Oregon will have cleaner drinking water, greater access to the internet, and increased options for public transportation. Thousands of jobs will be created, as Oregon's infrastructure changes from the ground up.
Plus, as President Biden noted, I used my position as the chairman of the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee to get in that law a dramatic increase in funding for wildfire prevention— anyone who has spent time in Oregon or elsewhere in the West during the last few summers knows how critical that work is.
This is what it looks like when we elect Democrats to build for the future, instead of empowering extremist Republicans who foment hate while they line the pockets of billionaires. Will you donate now to help me keep and expand our Democratic majorities in 2022 so we can continue this kind of work creating chances and a brighter future for everyone, no matter where they live, what they look like, or how big their bank account is?
We have a lot to look forward to. We're creating thousands of good paying, union jobs. A modern and resilient infrastructure with substantial investments in our electric vehicle future, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels that pollute the planet and fund autocrats and tyrants around the world. But only if we do the hard work to make it possible.
Thanks for being a champion for this important work!
Onward!
Jeff
