50 votes. Here’s what’s next:
Our fight to save American democracy achieved a critical milestone today.
All 50 Democratic Senators — including Sen. Joe Manchin — voted today to advance the For the People Act.
Of course, because of the filibuster, that's not enough. Not yet.
Here's what's next: I will continue to work with all of my colleagues to fix the filibuster, to ensure that a majority of Senators can take action on behalf of the American people.
But while process and procedure matter, let's not lose sight of the substance of what just happened. Democrats were united in our fight to:
- Stop billionaires and wealthy corporations from buying elections
- Enact new ethics rules for Congress, the President, and the Supreme Court.
- Stop partisan gerrymandering.
- Make it much easier to register to vote.
- Protect Americans' freedom to vote, no matter where we live.
And every single Republican voted against those basic pro-democracy principles.
It's appalling. If they don't believe the people should get to decide who governs, they shouldn't be trusted with a position of power.
We are in a struggle for the soul of our country.
We have to pass this legislation to protect Americans' freedom to vote. And we must expand our very narrow majorities in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House. Please donate right now and keep up the fight.
Onward!
