Last I checked, the Cold War was over
Early in my career, in the height of the Cold War, I worked on nuclear arms control, because the threat of nuclear armageddon posed a real, existential threat to humanity.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, those fears receded, but the dangers posed by these doomsday weapons are still all too real. We've seen rogue regimes like Iran try to get their hands on them, and worried that even a rogue U.S. president might deploy a nuclear weapon in a fit of anger or ego.
Here's the good news: President Biden has already extended the New START Treaty with Russia.
Now, we must reduce our country's nuclear arsenal further, in cooperation with other nuclear nations around the world.
That's why I'm reaching out to you today on behalf of our friends at the Council for a Livable World. Please sign our petition calling on President Biden to recommit to a mutual nuclear arms reduction with Russia.
There are no winners when it comes to nuclear weaponry. The threat of mass annihilation and our responsibility to each other as humans demands we be brave, that we mutually and peacefully step back from this destructive power.
I've long partnered with the Council for a Livable World to support candidates and causes that want to smartly and safely rebuild our alliances around the world while safely drawing down our nuclear arsenal.
Now is the time to recommit to this fight. Donald Trump's reckless brinkmanship is over, and we have real leadership once again in the White House.
