Mr. Trump, resign.

Donald Trump now has the disgraceful distinction of being the only President in American history to have been impeached twice by the House of Representatives.

And he certainly deserves it.

He has spent the two months since he lost the election spouting lies in an effort to overturn the results. It was an attempted coup, culminating with a violent mob assaulting the Capitol and threatening Congress and the Vice President.

The President of the United States incited an insurrection against our government. It is shocking even to write those words.

Trump called on his supporters to come to Washington on January 6 (“Be there, will be wild!) and then incited them to violence: “If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore. … So we’re going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue … and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

To defend our democracy, it is imperative that we hold Donald Trump accountable.

For one more week, Mitch McConnell controls the schedule of the Senate. If Senator McConnell calls for it, we can conduct this impeachment trial starting tomorrow.
