What happens if Oregon Republicans walk out again:
I'm going to ask you to make a critical last-minute donation to Shemia Fagan for Oregon Secretary of State. But before I do that, let's be very specific about what's at stake in her race:
In 2021, the Oregon Legislature will be tasked with drawing new district maps after the census. Under Oregon law, if the Legislature doesn't get the job done (or the Governor vetoes the maps), the maps for the Legislature itself will be drawn by our next Secretary of State.
Now, I have confidence in the Democratic leaders of the Legislature to draw those maps fairly and expeditiously. But remember this—in the last two legislative sessions, Republicans have walked out, leaving lots of business undone.
If the Republicans control the Secretary of State's office next year, they have a strong incentive to walk out again, making a Republican gerrymander by a Republican Secretary of State much more likely.
Just look at Wisconsin: In 2018, Democrats won 205,000 more votes, but Republicans won a 63-35 majority in their House of Representatives. We can't let that happen in Oregon.
If we elect Shemia Fagan, Republicans won't have the same incentive to walk out. And we can ensure that the Oregon Legislature fairly represents all Oregonians for the next decade.
Shemia's race is extremely competitive -- we can't take anything for granted. And they're making final spending decisions about where to communicate and send organizers to get out the vote.
Donate to Shemia Fagan right now. The future of Oregon for the next decade hangs in the balance.
Onward!
